First time Fall Soccer

We knew we weren't going to force the issue, but we also wanted to provide the opportunity if William wanted to do it.  The start of a new school year also means the start of soccer season.  We were kind of surprised when he decided he wanted to give it a try.  He had impressed us with his transition into kindergarten and so we were optimistic about how soccer might provide the perfect opportunity to play and connect with his friends.

A couple weeks in, we were seriously contemplating what to do.  Most of the time he told us that he wanted to play but once we got to the field, all he wanted to do was sit on the edge and watch his friends.  He would get tearful when we'd try and encourage him and we still, to this day, aren't sure why.  Funny thing is, we decided to try having his friend Evan pick him up and take him to a couple practices and even a game.  Every time he went with Evan, he played (o;  Every time Curtis or I (or both) would be there, he'd crumple and cry.  When asked why he didn't want to play while we were there, he'd say, "I don't know."  We were left perplexed.  Again, we had told him he didn't have to play and just wanted him to have fun, no matter the decision he made.  I know one day we'll look back and laugh at all this.  For now, we're unsure what's going on in that little head of his.  Definitely one of those tough parent moments.

Here's a couple pictures of him at one of the practices when he had told me he wanted to get out on the field (o;
Maybe no one will see me if I pull my sweatshirt over my head?

Yep.  Didn't move from his spot on the field.  Still the exact same distance from the goal.
See him out there like a dead bug?  That's my boy!
And when asked if he wanted to come off the field, he said no.  What's a parent supposed to do? (o;
Today marked the last game of the season.  At the last few practices and the game today, he finally started expressing with assurance that he no longer wanted to go to soccer.  No harm done.  Maybe he'll want to play next year?  Maybe he'll never want to play soccer again?  Can't say we didn't try!  We're learning more and more about our William everyday and we're hopeful, as parents, we made the right decisions in this situation.

Even if he never likes soccer (or any other sports for that matter!) we won't love him any less!  He'll always be our boy...and a pretty handsome one at that (o;

And hey, if you have any insights...we're all ears.
